Thought this worthy a post - looking forward to Friday, when Joel-Peter Witkin will be in Tucson for his show at the Etherton Gallery. He's giving a slide lecture and book signing.

What satisfies as shock-art to most, reality TV and Fear Factor-style gore, is childsplay for Witkin. His work seems uninterested in it's own shocking effect which is a self-preservation knee-jerk reaction on the part of the viewer. If the viewer makes the effort to look closer at Witkins imagery, the potential for transformative response is recognized. Come to find out - Witkin spent time in the service as a combat photographer, and currently lives in New Mexico!
